Which Program Is Right For My Child?

The answer to this question depends on the following…
– Your child’s age and attention span
– Your child’s previous skating experience and current skill level

Children that are 2-4 years of age, with very little or no skating experience, are eligible to enroll in the Parent & Tot program.  This program offers group lessons that focus on basic movements such as pushing, & gliding.  Parents are required to be on the ice and also need to have a confident skating ability. Children who have completed the 3 levels of the Parent & Tot  must advance to the Precanskate program.

Children that are 3-6 years of age, with very little or no skating experience, are eligible to enroll in the Precanskate program.  This program offers small group lessons that focus on basic movements such as pushing, & gliding.  Parents are not required to be on the ice but are required to be present at the entire session watching from the stands or lobby. Children who have completed the 3 levels of PreCanskate are eligible to enroll in the Canskate program regardless of age.

If your child is 6 years or older and is interested in learning to skate but has little or no prior skating experience, the Canskate program will be most suitable. This program focuses on the fundamental movements of skating through interactive group lessons.   Children advance at their own pace through 6 stages.  Completion of this program could lead to either hockey or figure skating.

We offer Inclusion programs with qualified and specially trained coaching. Please contact the office for further information. *** Not available at this time ***

If your child is 12 and older and is interested in learning to skate but has little to no prior experience, we offer a Teen/Adult program that is based on the CanSkate program. This program focuses on the fundamental movements of skating and is also a great program for winter exercise. Former figure skaters are welcome!

Children who have developed basic skating skills through the Canskate Programs, and who show a desire and aptitude for figure skating, may be invited to enroll in the STAR Program. Skaters must have completed the 4th stage of Canskate to be eligible.

Children who have completed the stage 2 of the Canskate program and have an interest in playing hockey, are eligible to enroll in the PrePower Program. This program teaches the essential skating skills required for hockey. Completion of this program leads to the Canpower and Hockey Skills Program. This is not a learn to skate program.  Full Hockey equipment is required plus stick. A jersey will be provided.

If your child has completed level 3 of the PrePower program, they are invited to register for our Canpower program.  This program of “drills and skills” focuses on power, coordination & endurance for the advanced hockey player.  Full Hockey equipment is required plus stick. A jersey will be provided.

All skaters in all programs are required to provide their OWN hockey or figure skates (lace-up) and a CSA approved hockey helmet (with face cage protection) – NO bike helmets permitted. Skaters also need to provide their own warm clothing and gloves/mittens while they are on the ice. Equipment is not provided by Milton Skating Club, nor are rentals available for any reason at any time during our programs. Helmets must be in good condition, not broken or missing pieces, and must fit the skater properly. No exceptions will be made to this policy. Skaters that show up to classes without the proper equipment will not be allowed on the ice.

How to prepare for your skating lessons:
  • Get your skates sharpened
  • Make sure your helmet fits
  • Pack your mittens or gloves.
  • Pack an old rag to wipe your blades with after your lesson.
  • Practice putting on your skates and tying them, if you need help then watch our video on how to tie skate.

On the first day:

  • Arrive early and check in at the Learn to Skate table, this is usually a very busy time often resulting in a line up for name tag collection.
  • Collect your name tag and your coloured skate tag from the table.
  • Proceed to the dressing rooms to put on your skates. Dressing rooms are located on the side of the rink opposite the stadium seating.
  • Clip your name tag and felt tag onto your zipper pull or pocket
  • Skaters then wait at the rink door until they are welcomed onto the ice by a coach or Program Assistant (PA).
  • Parents MUST stay in the arena. Parents are welcome to watch their children from the stadium seats, or from the viewing area of the lobby. Please do not use the player’s benches or the penalty box. We reserve these areas for our equipment and a designated first aid area.
  • During the first few lessons your child may be moved between groups, we continually assess the skaters so that they are with children of like abilities.
  • At the end of the lesson, collect your child at the opposite end of the rink from where you dropped them off.

Does my child need experience to register for Precanskate or Canskate lessons?

No. Both are Learn to skate programs which teach children of all abilities.

Do I need my own equipment?

Yes. Please refer to the Equipment section of this page for more information on equipment and where to buy it.

How do I register my child in the right level?

Make sure that you have the correct group (PreCanskate/Canskate) and we will do the rest. If you have skated with us before we will have record of all of your child’s skating achievements. If you are new to MSC we will assess your child’s skills and then place them in the appropriate group. Usually this will happen during the first week.

I have a scheduling conflict can I switch classes?

MSC will try to accommodate parents that need to change their session day or time that their children skate on. Subject to class availability, switch requests must be submitted in writing (not accepted by phone) and can only be done through the club office. One switch per skater, per session. Please note, switching session days may be subject to a small fee depending on the number of classes left and session cost (session fees vary based on program duration).

I don’t think my child is ready for group skating lessons can I get a refund?

We recommend having a conversation with the On Ice Convener or the Canskate Coordinator, as they may be able to make suggestions to help your child enjoy their lessons. Together you can make the best plan of action. If withdrawal is the best step then we offer a family credit onto your MSC account, it is calculated by the registration fee less the number of classes that have passed and an administration fee of $44.

My child is injured and will need to withdraw?

If your child is injured and has been advised not to continue skating, we will be able to refund you once a Doctor’s note has been provided. It is calculated by the registration fee, less the number of classes that have passed and a $44.00 administration fee.

My child will miss a class can we have a makeup class?

NO. Milton SC does not offer make-up classes, credits or refunds for missed classes due to any personal reasons such as personal illness, illness due to communicable disease, personal schedule conflicts or as a result of Rain, Snow or other inclement weather.

Can I drop my child off at the arena and then leave?

NO. A parent or legal guardian (age 18 or older) must remain in attendance for the full duration of their child/ren skating lesson of which they are registered to and inside their skaters designated rink.
